Isolator Eliminator Cross Charge Regulator
Thanks to the Eliminator, the starter battery can now be treated to a correct charge. The Eliminator is a multi-step regulator with the express purpose of tending for the starter battery. It does so by siphoning some of the current from any charge source attached to the house bank. In the process, it eliminates undercharges or overcharges typical of isolators.
Just Say NO to Isolators
Isolator problems are legendary ...excessive voltage drops, anywhere from 8/10 to 1-1/2 volts, prevent full charges without special regulators, while full charge regulators for house batteries cause overcharges on starter batteries. When a manual switch is used to charge house and starter battery together, chances are high that sooner or later the switch will be left on during discharge, bringing down the starter battery with the house bank.
How it Operates
The Eliminator connects between the house and starter banks, maintaining the correct charge level on the starter bank while the house bank is being charged from alternators, battery chargers, solar panels, wind generators or other charging devices. A microcomputer controls a multi-step charge process that restores a full charge without allowing overcharge. The Eliminator is fully automatic and can even be left operating when the house bank is equalized to 16+ Volts. Battery temperature sensing is standard, and protects batteries in hot or cold weather.
Used properly, the Eliminator will keep any starter battery topped up and ready to crank. Isolators are usually rated at 70 Amps and up, and may seem like a better bargain, however, the Eliminator is able to limit current, as well as turn it off completely. The Eliminator also controls the direction of current flow, and determines the final voltage on the battery ...temperature compensated. The Eliminator is safer, and will extend battery life and reduce water maintenance. In the final analysis, cost of ownership is less with the Eliminator than with isolators.
The Eliminator reduces system complexity. Ideally, the reserve battery is used for nothing except the starter motor. All other loads are drawn from the deep cycle bank, and all charge sources are connected directly to it as well.
Use with Inverter/Chargers
The Eliminator is the perfect companion to inverters with battery chargers, since such chargers can only charge one bank. Let the Eliminator keep the reserve bank at the correct voltage. Like the isolator, the Eliminator will not let current flow from the starter battery back toward the charge source.
Temperature Compensation
The temperature sensor, adjusts charge voltage over a
range of -20 to 60
C. In colder climates, the Eliminator maintains a higher voltage than it does in
hot weather. Above
the Eliminator shuts off completely, perhaps avoiding thermal run-away of the
starter battery.
Dimensions and Mounting
The Eliminator is 6.2 inches, (157.5 mm) wide by 6.4 inches, (162.6 mm) long. It stands 2.2 inches, (55.9 mm) off the mounting surface. It can be mounted in any orientation.
Connection to the Eliminator is done with ring terminals under brass plated screws.
