OutBack 48Volt GS8048A-01 Radian Inverter 120/240Vac
The Radian GS8048A-01 is the newest inverter from Outback Power. Unlike other Outback models, the Radian is capable of 120/240 volts AC output using just a single unit. While you can combine up to 10 Radian inverters in parallel for 80,000 watts, it's not necessary to use more than one Radian if your power consumption is less than 8,000 watts. If you plan to parallel multiple units for more power, a HUB4 or HUB10.3 communications manager is necessary. The Radian is only available in a 48 volt DC input.
These units are referred to as grid-interactive, however can also be used as a stand- alone power source. It can be used as a standard grid-tie inverter and offset your utility bill or it can work as an off-grid system. In the event that you lose utility power, the Radian will take over by keeping your house powered. The length of time you will have backup power will depend upon the storage capacity of your battery bank. If you have a generator, the Radian's built-in charger can be used to keep your batteries full. If inclement weather prevents your solar array from charging your batteries, a generator can save the day (and your batteries).
What makes the GS8048A-01 version of the Radian family special is the incredibly versatile battery charger. It can be used with newer emerging battery technologies such as lithium-ion which has a more complicated battery charging algorithm than the more commonly used wet-celled, AGM, or Gel celled batteries of today.
Another new feature of the Radian GS8048A-01 is the GridZero mode. This can be confused with the standard grid tied features of its predecessors with power offset modes and the ability to export power to a utility grid. Make no mistake, this can make all the difference when choosing the inverter that is right for any particular application. In some applications, the ability to sell power back to the grid is limited, restricted, or otherwise undesirable.
In addition to all of the standard modes used with the Radian series inverters, GridZero Technology, the newest of the Radian's seven input modes, provides the perfect balance between utility power and stored renewable energy. By allowing a home or business to satisfy most of its power needs with renewable sources, grid supplied power is only tapped when load demand exceeds a pre-set threshold. While the Radian is still grid-connected, grid dependence is reduced to zero whenever possible. Basically, the system will get as close to off grid as many people wish to be, while still being connected to the grid. Not only that, but if your power load demands exceed your inverters capacity the grid can make up the difference. Thereby, allowing a smaller inverter to do most of the work, but the utility grid can be utilized only if needed when load demands may exceed a system"s capabilities.
When used in conjunction with the GSLC load center, installation is fast and easy. Generally, the installation can be completed by the home owner, or electrician. However, be sure to check with your local electrical inspector and utility company for local laws and regulations when connecting to the grid. Some jurisdictions require grid-interactive inverters to be installed by licensed electricians.
