American Solar Panels, German Solar Panels and more Solar Panels. We here at the Solar Biz have been striving to support the American Solar Panel industry, by selling as many brands of USA made Solar Panels as we can.
Solar Panels come in two basic flavors; Monocrystalline and Polycrystalline. Both work quite well in most climates. Poly however, seem to do better in hot temperatures, while Mono does quite well in everything but. Mono panels are usually slightly more efficient than Poly for the same square footage but you pay a premium for Mono panels.
Poly solar panels are usually an iridescent blue and Mono solar panels are almost always black. Frames are made in silver or anodized black, but you usually have to buy whatever frame color is being manufactured at the time.
Several years ago the most common solar panels were smaller panels and they were either 12 volt (36 cell) or 24 volt (72 cell), because they needed to match the battery bank of your system. Not anymore. Most solar panel manufacturers have gone to larger wattage solar panels using the 60 cell format with larger cells. This puts the maximum Power Voltage around 30 volts and the Open Circuit Voltage around 36 volts.
We can now series connect solar panels for higher voltages to make wire runs more efficient and use smaller wire. Almost everyone these days uses a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) charge controller, allowing open circuit string voltages from typically 90 volts to close to 600 volts DC input. MPPT controllers allow us to program the output to perfectly charge our 12, 24, or 48 volt battery banks.
